@lewis_goodall Lab has form when it comes to ref results it dislike: just 8 years after UK voted to remain, Lab’s 1983 manifesto promised to withdraw from EEC…without a referendum. Also no mention from Burnham of any ref on electoral reform, despite precedent of 2011.
@flash_robamy@1968Tv The Kop was supposed to be for home fans (ie Wales’s) as well. Don’t recall seeing too many Welshmen there that night tho…just drunken Caledonians who left the Kop looking like a bomb site.
@BigWatchLover@1968Tv From a neutral’s angle, Scotland’s flukey success over Wales 8 years later was even worse: a mediocre team advanced to Mexico 86 while a team consisting of Rush, Hughes, Southall and Radcliffe had to sit it out.
@richardmarcj@PaulEmbery Said the man who denounced and destroyed grammar schools (accessed by lots of provincial, working class households) while giving a free pass to public schools (such as his own alma mater).
@rcolvile@marcusaroberts We may need to redefine what ‘calling an election’ means. AB may have just called an election (with all the attendant rhetoric and promises) but with a campaign lasting several years rather than weeks.
@neilhay3s My point was simply that such a demotion would boost the profile of all those non-league clubs who are important to their communities but financially strapped (eg Wrexham till a few years ago). Would also give City a chance to redeem their reputation.
If City’s punishment is to be not just punitive but of public benefit, why not send MCFC to National League North? Several community-owned clubs in that league (eg Chester) are struggling to get by & would benefit hugely from games against exiled royalty.
@paulbristow79@wallaceme His ancestor, Henry, was a pillar of Edwardian liberalism and the last Liberal leader to win a Commons majority. Wonder what the rest of the C-B family make of David’s observation…
@DanielJHannan Plus ca change…Some of Canada’s earliest settlements were developed by British ‘loyalists’ fleeing from vengeful
Yankees after War of Independence.
@alexpethickPKC The record of former Soviet bloc countries (in 1990s) also suggests that a separation of powers gets blurred in infant political systems, where governing classes feel impelled to pull together so as to sustain a fledgling state
@neilhay3s@ShippersUnbound Ken’s case is especially relevant, given that he was responsible for transport policy and an arguably inadequate response to the 20 mph debacle. I heard the term ‘cheating the hangman’ being used by someone who commutes from Mold to Wrexham…
