If you call timeout with 12 seconds to go, you can call a play to all but assure a last shot. You either win the game there, or you are in great position to win in overtime.

What does he do instead? He allows a young and still inexperienced 7' 4" center to dribble it and then throw it to a guy that has been erratic and bad all night.

All this in the highest leverage situation.

Coaching matters. It matters in crunch time.

The Spurs are obviously going to hold for the final shot anyway. Just burn a timeout and draw up a play.
