Thank you #WhatIsSchool, @ShiftParadigm@deem_ellen for hosting an insightful and significant chat! I feel so encouraged seeing how educators are using all sorts of platforms to reach out, share and grow!
A6: Definitely having follow up conversations, letting the student know that I am available for any help needed in catching up or getting back into the swing of things. #WhatIsSchool
@BernadetteMbof1 @mrkempnz Sorry to hear that you experienced education like that growing up. So amazing and powerful that you want to be the change going forward and impact the future generations positively! WOW!
A5: Timing will all depend on the severity of what happened at home for that particular student. You can often see when a student is ready to get back into learning, failing that having a conversation allows for the student to let you know how they are doing. #WhatIsSchool
A4: Flexibility is key, the student/students will not be able to learn if they feel stressed or unsafe. Knowing how appropriate the lesson is for certain students will come through building open and supportive relationships with students.#WhatIsSchool
A3: Often changing the kind of learning style could help, pivoting from listening and writing (audio -visual) to actively doing something (kinetic). Possibly even just taking a break as a class and doing something completely unrelated to the syllabus for a while. #WhatIsSchool
A2: It all depends on your relationship with the student as well as certain school policies. Ultimately I would allow the student space to share if he/her needs or wants to. It cannot be forced and the student should be reassured that it is safe to talk. #WhatIsSchool
@cossie29 This is so true, I completely forgot that positive changes can also indicate that something has happened at home. Thank you for sharing! #WhatIsSchool
A1: Your students could become distracted in class, have a sudden change in behavior, show sings of tiredness, become disruptive, not eat (or not bring lunch).
A2: At Laidlaw we are using an online site/programme called Moodle, which is pretty effective, from sharing notes to videos to completing assignments. Not sure if it would have as much of an effect with younger students. #PrimarySTEMchat
