And even more importantly, such a system is destructive of any sense of pride in the creature man, and if there is anything man’s religions must safeguard, it is man’s “self-esteem”. (The Potter’s Freedom)
This is the religion that James R. White of Tempe, Arizona, is selling: "What are the doctrines of grace and why do they matter? Such is like asking, “What does the Bible teach about the very heart of the gospel, and does it matter one way or the other?”
1) limiting God’s power, 2) exalting man’s abilities, and 3) “channeling” God’s power through their own structures. A perfect salvation that is freely bestowed by God for his own glory is not a “system” that can be controlled by a religious body or group.
Napoleon at St. Helena is reported to have been struck with the reflection that millions are now ready to die for the crucified Nazarene who founded a spiritual empire by love, while no one would die for Alexander, or Caesar, or himself, who founded temporal empires by force.
He saw in this contrast a convincing argument for the divinity of Christ, saying: "I know men, and I tell you, Christ was not a man. Everything about Christ astonishes me. His spirit overwhelms and confounds me. There is no comparison between him and any other being.
"Here, then, is what God's truth requires us to seek in examining ourselves: it requires the kind of knowledge that will strip us of all confidence in our own ability, deprive us of all occasion for boasting, and lead us to submission." Calvin, Institutes of the Christian Religin
and thus to be redirected in his affections and reformed to the obedience of the righteousness of God. (The Geneva Confession of 1536, #4. Natural man).
We acknowledge man by nature to be blind, darkened in understanding, and full of corruption and perversity of heart, so that of himself he has no power to be able to comprehend the true knowledge of God as is proper, nor to apply himself to good works.
But on the contrary, if he is left by God to what he is by nature, he is only able to live in ignorance and to be abandoned to all iniquity. Hence he has need to be illumined by God, so that he come to the right knowledge of his salvation,
This original and inherited sin has so permeated the whole human race and so ruined and poisoned it that man, who had become a child of wrath and an enemy of God, could not be saved or restored by anyone except God through Christ.
Whatever good remained in him is continually enervated through daily faults and imperfections, so that it becomes even more wicked. For the power of sin and imperfection is so strong in us that reason cannot follow what it knows nor can the mind kindle a divine spark and fan it.
This man, whom God made righteous and good, fell into sin through his own guilt, and dragged the whole human race into this fall with him and subjected it to such misery. (The First Helvetic Confession of 1536, #7. Concerning Man)
Man, the most perfect image of God on earth and among visible creatures the most excellent and eminent, is composed of body and soul. The body is mortal, the soul immortal.
Mr. Dines has taken himself a place on the wall of the city slightly to the right of Nahum the Elkohite. He is so pessimistic he must make up adverbs - "unmeechingly" - to describe his pessimism (The Money Game, pg 285)
Adam Smith (1930-2014) equates technical analysts to Prophets of Israel who were always displeased by the cavorting they saw before them in The Money Game (1968).
Then in would march the Assyrians or the Scythians, and as they put everything to the torch, the Prophet, from his place upon the wall of the city, would say lo, woe, the indignation of the Lord is visited upon us.
