School-going pupils in Jinja District survive by working on sugarcane plantations to stay in school. During lunchtime, they invade sugarcane plantations to harvest cane so they can have something to eat and continue attending school.
Buyinza Micheal, a teacher at one of the government schools, mentioned that most parents no longer provide food for their children, which is why many are dropping out of school; they cannot concentrate in class while hungry.
Jamil Muganza, a sugarcane farmer in Busedde Sub-County, Jinja District, also complained that schoolchildren have made it a habit of stealing their cane, which has led to a significant decline in production.
