The focus on Saxon liberty from some American nationalists is based on real history, but they are using it to dodge the actual point.

Jefferson and the Whig tradition really did appeal to Saxon England. In his 1774 Summary View, Jefferson framed American independence as a recovery of ancient English liberty from before the Norman conquest. Allodial land, the ancient constitution, the rights of Englishmen, common law liberty, and the image of a freer Saxon England were all part of the Whig imagination.

The problem is that the American Revolution was still revolutionary Whiggery. It was colonial liberal republicanism dressed up in the language of ancient English liberty. The founders invoked inherited rights, property, common law, and local self government, then used those things to justify rebellion against the constitutional order that had preserved them.

Most of the founders were not Jefferson style Saxon romantics. Washington, Hamilton, Madison, Adams, Franklin, and Paine were not deriving America from the Witan. They were working from Whig constitutionalism, Enlightenment rights theory, Protestant dissent, commercial grievance, colonial self government, and republican ideology. Jefferson’s Saxonism was real, but it was one layer of the founding myth, not the soul of the founding.

The Loyalists were also heirs of English liberty. They were also colonial, armed, property holding, English speaking, and formed by the same British constitutional world. They read the same law, lived under the same empire, and inherited the same political vocabulary. Yet they rejected the Revolution as sedition, impiety, mob rule, and oligarchic self interest disguised as liberty.

Ontario was built by Loyalists who went north after the Revolution. They brought common law, monarchy, Protestant civic morality, local order, courts, schools, farms, banks, churches, militia service, and the belief that liberty only exists inside law, hierarchy, duty, and restraint. Ontario became the crucible of Anglo Canada because those people refused the American version of English liberty.

So when an American nationalist says “we are the Saxons,” the Loyalist answer is obvious. So were we. The question is what you did with the inheritance.

Jefferson’s niche Saxonism doesn’t make the American Revolution illiberal. It shows that revolutionary liberal republicanism borrows older ethnic, legal, and historical symbols to legitimise itself.

The Revolution was later turned into sacred national mythology through schoolbooks, monuments, civic rituals, founder worship, and selective history. The mob violence, property confiscations, loyalty oaths, Committees of Safety, exile, merchant interests, smuggling networks, and planter class calculations were buried under marble temples, parchment mythology, and hymns to liberty.

That is why this argument appeals to modern American nationalists. It lets them keep the Revolution while pretending they’ve escaped its liberalism. It lets them claim Jefferson, Hancock, Madison, Paine, and the republican founding while baptising the whole thing in Saxon blood memory.

Our ancestors faced mobs, confiscations, defrocked priests, burned Anglican churches, public violence against suspected Loyalists, hangings and executions, loyalty oaths, exile, and the collapse of lawful authority. They saw liberty weaponised against order, like proto Bolsheviks or sans culottes before the French Revolution had even reached its full madness.

The American tradition represents the Whig liberal mutation of English liberty. The Loyalist tradition represents the illiberal, counter revolutionary, conservative survival of English order. The existence of Canada itself refutes the American Revolution.

The Loyalists believed this so strongly that they abandoned everything, went north, built civilization out of a frozen hellscape, armed themselves, and indefinitely to defend it from the liberal revolutionary American republic.
