I blew through my Max plan and then Fable 5 started charging my card over a session I should've killed hours ago. This screenshot is why 👇

77% of a full 1M-token window, gone. And look where: Messages 74%. Not the system prompt, not tools, not memory (those are ~24k combined). The thing quietly draining it is the conversation itself.

Here's the part that hits your wallet: every turn re-reads the entire chat. A session this size runs ~$0.80 per message when your cache is hitting and climbs toward $8 the moment it breaks. A model switch, a reorder, an injected timestamp is all it takes. On a flat plan you just burn your allowance faster. Once you overflow to API, that's real money on a conversation you should've closed.

I let mine get this bad. Three commands fixed it, and they cost nothing:
→ /clear between unrelated tasks stop dragging dead context into new work
→ /compact at phase boundaries, early a healthy session summarizes far better than a fried one
→ Keep durable rules in CLAUDE.md, not in chat chat gets summarized away, CLAUDE.md survives
Fable's 1M window is a luxury, not a landfill.
