There are no biological racial traits or racial features. There aren't even aggregate genetics at a "racial" level. Race is a lens through which an observer chooses to see the observed. It's not an attribute of the observed.
Here's some of the best advice I got when I became a manager last year! It's simple, but considering most people receive no management training whatsoever these days, it's better than nothing. Thread!
For anyone interested in education, anti-oppression and education without oppression, here is the intro to the series of stories (and videos) from my Atkinson Fellowship that will be released in @TorontoStar all September. https://t.co/mvhQyTAypo
“The OHRC questions the value of further anti-racism policies, statements, programs and policy reviews without effectively implementing past recommendations...” https://t.co/ykFkS6xlXq
If I hear, "Baby boomers don't like open floor plans" or "Millennials prefer texting to email," I'll ask, "Would we say the same thing about a younger/older worker?" Turns out many age perceptions are false & impact workplace interactions:

What's an interview question you'd ask people interviewing for a job in a school ito assess their understanding of how racism operates in schools? A question that gets at their commitment to anti-racism? A response that would land you at a hard "no" for hiring that person?
When witnessing a bully in the workplace, I can:
1-Distract (enter an isolated space where the bullying is taking place and make myself known)
2-Delegate (if I don't feel I can get involved, ask someone with more power)
3-Direct (confront the harasser)

Check this job ad. In addition to the fetishy language describing Africa, they’re asking applicants to demonstrate understanding of the audience... but not of the country and people and lives and culture that the news will be covering. Such a huge miss.
In the same week, the New York Times posted a truly bananas job posting for a Nairobi Bureau Chief that painted Africa as some type of colonialist wet dream. Here. Read it for yourself. It's still up: https://t.co/PXb9cJashL

If you expect a consultant to come in and tell you WHY diversity and inclusion is important for your company, you are not ready to embark on the journey.
Once you’ve internalized the why, then hire a consultant to tell you the HOW.
The why has to come from you.
I use https://t.co/ZIIpnOE5Rb when I want to know how to pronounce a colleague's name that is unfamiliar to me. It's not perfect, so I also ask, "Did I say your name correctly?" after meeting them. #Inclusion#Belonging#BetterAllies
I speak openly about my parenting responsibilities. E.g. “I don’t do meetings after 5 p.m. because of my children.” Or "I’m leaving at 3:30 today because I’ve been traveling a lot and want to pick up my kids from school." #allsyhip#betterallies https://t.co/qqnme9UI22
After reading this @LaszloBock piece, I've decided to ask staff from underrepresented groups, "What 2 changes would make it easier for you to do a great job?" And then take action. (I should ask everyone, but I'm going to start with marginalized people.)
