Today, Sunday, July 7th, 2024, we celebrate World Kiswahili Language Day, honoring the most spoken African language, spoken by nearly 200 million people in East and Central Africa; Kenya, Tanzania, Congo-Kinshasa, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, Mozambique, Oman in the Middle East, and beyond!
Kiswahili unites almost one-third of Africa's geographical region, fostering education and creativity, promoting cultural exchange, and socio-political dynamism. Its impact on the global African community is profound and growing. Last year, during Her Excellency Francia Mรกrquez's, the first Afro-Latina elected Vice President of Colombia, official state visit to Kenya, discussions were held on increasing bilateral and South-to-South trade. The government of the South American nation subsequently announced the introduction of Kiswahili in schools.
The Kiswahili language also holds cultural significance for African Americans. Kiswahili personal names are popular in Black America, with the name Zuri, meaning beautiful or good in Kiswahili, ranking as the most popular name for newborn girls.
Kwanzaa, the Black American holiday, derives from the Swahili phrase "matunda ya kwanza," meaning "first fruits." It is based on community practices among African Bantu agricultural communities, from which the Kiswahili language originates, celebrating after the harvest. The seven-day holiday is centered around seven Kiswahili-Bantu cultural-ethical principles, or "Nguzo Saba": Umoja (Unity), Kujichagulia (Self-Determination), Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility), Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics), Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (Creativity), and Imani (Faith).
In addition to being both spoken and taught in most of the aforementioned African nations, Malawi, South Africa, and Botswana have announced plans to incorporate Kiswahili into their national curricula. Kiswahili is also an official language of two regional intergovernmental organizations, the East African Community (EAC) and Southern African Development Cooperation (SADC), along with the African Union.
Just as the Institut Franรงais promotes French language and cultural capital globally, and Confucius Institutes (CIs) advance Chinese language and culture in the interest of the Chinese Communist Party and Chinese development, the EAC, led by the Presidents of Tanzania and Zanzibar, respectively H.E. @SuluhuSamia and H.E. @DrHmwinyi, should recognize the national socio-cultural and socio-economic value of fostering engagement between the Zanzibar-based East African Kiswahili Commission (EAKC) @Eakc_kiswahili and academic and cultural institutions within the global African diaspora, particularly in Black America.
Promoting Kiswahili and developing cultural exchanges with Black American educational and social institutions and associations, such as Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) like Howard University, the alma mater of Vice President Kamala Harris, and Morehouse University, the alma mater of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., as well as Black American fraternities and sororities, can support knowledge transfer, investments, and innovation from Black America to the Swahili-speaking world, and vice versa.
This exchange will enhance human development and open up global opportunities for trade, travel, and prosperity for peoples of African descent.
Why shouldnโt Swahili-speaking African nations acknowledge and incorporate the celebration of Kwanzaa? The benefits of such a move, particular in the area of culturally driven tourism, are so obvious. Suffice it to say, cultural capital equals economic capital.
Kudos to UNESCO for recognizing this day in 2022! Now it's up to African leaders to continue to uplift Kiswahili and promote it worldwide for the cultural and commercial benefit of all African people. Asante Sana!

Botswana, the often overlooked Southern African nation, may actually be the closest real-life example of Wakanda, the fictional Black civilization in Marvel Comics' Black Panther.
As the only stable and free nation in Africa with zero debt to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Botswana showcases the kind of Black sovereignty, self-reliance, and sustainability that captured the imagination of moviegoers who packed cinemas to watch Black Panther.
Just as Wakanda harnesses its Vibranium for the benefit of its people, Botswana skillfully manages its diamond wealth to ensure prosperity and ranks among the top countries in Africa for its Human Development Index (HDI), reflecting significant progress in social services such as healthcare and education.
The Republic of Botswana defies the typical narrative of African underdevelopment, civil wars, and corruption, exemplifying how resource management and financial independence can uplift a nation.
Along with its rich and diverse wildlife, recent studies suggest that Botswana is the birthplace of modern humans, making it the potential "Garden of Eden."
No wonder Botswana's President Mokgweetsi Masisi has been seeking to attract more attention to his small, stable, and peaceful nation of just under 3 million people.
His efforts include positioning it as a hub for media production through collaboration with US production companies such as Steve Harvey Global, as well as for entertainment, holistic travel, and tourism. If visiting humanity's origins doesn't heal you, I don't know what will?
If Botswana is the real Wakanda, that would make its President the real Black Panther.
