Either Indigenous filmmakers are necessary to represent Indigenous peoples or not. #HeatherRae has been lying for almost 30 years about who she is. A white woman has been passing & setting policy & gatekeeping. Native filmmaker silence validates her and invalidates us.
Now, I look back and think it’s really ironic that she made a fuss during my PhD defense—introducing the possibility of holding back a Native scholar from graduating—over her tribal affiliations that don’t even exist. Of course I couldn’t get it right—there are none.
Just recently our Fox Foundation Resident Actor Fellowship officially concluded after a significant extension due to the pandemic. Though we already knew and adored Kenny Ramos, this fellowship allowed the company to formally reintroduce them into the circle as the Fox Fellow.
