Jung's Attitude to Psychedelics: "#Jung did not value and even disapproved of the use of entheogens. Although they confirmed his discovery of the #collectiveunconscious, he highlighted the difficulty of integrating the #unconscious contents these agents release. In a letter to Victor White, Jung ([C.G. Jung Letters: Vol. 2], p. 172) suggested that 'there is no point in getting to know more of the collective unconscious than one gets through #dreams and #intuitions. The more you know of it the greater and heavier becomes our moral burden' because these contents then become our task and duties to deal with. He was afraid that we pay dearly for the 'pure gifts of the Gods,' and the use of these agents would create the problem of the sorcerer's apprentice, who knows 'how to call the #ghosts but did not know how to get rid of them again' ([ibid], p. 173). He believed that such new knowledge incurs 'a corresponding development of morality' ([ibid], p. 173) Jung insisted that one has to know how to deal with #unconscious contents, and he was concerned that the individual be #mature enough to integrate this material. An artificially induced experience of the unconscious may not accord with the individual's level of #psychological development. He saw these agents as a substitute for human effort and spontaneous experience."
