Simo Häyhä, a Finnish military sniper known as "The White Death". He is widely regarded as the deadliest sniper in history....

Häyhä served during 1939–1940 Winter War between Finland and the Soviet Union. He achieved the highest recorded number of confirmed sniper kills in any major war, with over 500 kills during the conflict. Häyhä primarily used a Finnish-produced M/28-30 rifle (a variant of the Mosin–Nagant) and a Suomi KP/-31 submachine gun. He preferred using iron sights over scoped sights, believing scopes could reveal a sniper's position. Häyhä was severely wounded on March 6, 1940, but he recovered and lived a quiet life after the war, working in farming and forestry. 

According to historical sources; when the Soviet Union launched its invasion of Finland in late 1939, they expected little resistance from the smaller nation. But among the snow-covered forests and icy winds of the Karelian front, they encountered an unexpected force: Simo Häyhä. A quiet farmer and skilled hunter, Häyhä had spent his life in the rugged Finnish wilderness, honing the instincts that would soon make him one of the most feared snipers in history. Armed with a simple iron-sighted rifle and dressed in white camouflage, he used the terrain to his advantage, disappearing into the snow like a ghost.

Over the course of just under 100 days, Häyhä would rack up an astonishing kill count—more than 500 confirmed, and likely many more unconfirmed. He struck with surgical precision, never using a scope to avoid glare that could give away his position. His patience was legendary; he could lie still for hours in subzero temperatures, waiting for the perfect shot. As Soviet troops grew more terrified, they gave him a chilling nickname: *Belaya Smert*—"The White Death." His presence alone was enough to sap enemy morale and force changes in Soviet tactics, making him one of the war's most effective psychological weapons.

But Häyhä’s legacy goes beyond his deadly accuracy. His actions embodied the fierce resilience of the Finnish people, who refused to yield despite overwhelming odds. Gravely wounded by an explosive bullet late in the war, Häyhä survived and lived to old age, never seeking fame for his wartime exploits. His story became a symbol of how individual skill, determination, and knowledge of one's land can shift the tide of history. To this day, Simo Häyhä remains a legend not just in sniper lore, but in the broader narrative of courage against impossible odds.
