Flooding remains critical across Thailand, with 25 provinces, 128 districts, 587 subdistricts and 2,500 villages affected. ฿250 Billion Water-Management Project Returns
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul is set to take a ฿250 billion water-management project to Cabinet approval. The plan includes a major Chai Nat–Pa Sak–Gulf of Thailand flood-diversion canal, designed to divert water and reduce long-term flooding risks in the Central Region and Bangkok. The project dates back to the Yingluck government and has been on hold since 2014.
Constitutional Court to Rule on Election Ballots
The Constitutional Court is scheduled to rule today on the use of barcodes on party-list ballots and QR codes on constituency ballots in the February 8 general election. The Court confirmed that proceedings will continue despite the special public holidays caused by flooding, with the ruling scheduled to be broadcast from 2:00 PM.
Floods Put ฿15.2 Trillion Economic Value at Risk
An estimate from Rangsit University’s Faculty of Economics puts the economic value at risk from flooding across 48 provinces, including Bangkok, at ฿15.2 trillion, equivalent to about 81% of Thailand’s GDP. The assessment projects a 0.36–0.73% reduction in Q3 2026 GDP, with manufacturing and agriculture among the sectors expected to be most affected.
PM Orders Cabinet to Stay in Thailand After Returning From 7-Day Foreign Trip
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul was on a 7-days trip where he felt that meeting USB’s officials in London was more important than cutting short his trip and helping fellow Thais who were suffering. Despite having no official meetings with leaders in UK, PM Anutin remained in London as per planned schedule. UBS is the 2ndlargest shareholder on STECON, the listed company owned by the Charvirakul family.
Thailand’s August Exports Jump 24.3%
Thailand’s exports increased 24.3% year-on-year in August to US$34.62 billion, the fastest growth in 56 months and the 26th consecutive month of expansion. Growth was driven particularly by AI-related electronics and technology infrastructure, while exports to the US rose 48.7%, China 15.5% and the EU 23.1%.
Puripol Wins Second Asian Games Gold
Thailand’s Puripol “Thep Bew” Boonson won the men’s 200m gold medal at the Asian Games in Japan in 19.88 seconds, matching the Asian Games record. It was his second gold of the Games after winning the 100m, and made him the first Thai athlete to win the men’s 200m at the Asian Games in 52 years.
