I agree with this take. Modern America, in a very fundamental way, is the product of Reconstruction and the Civil Rights era, in all its failures and successes. The America that exists prior to it, one that tolerated slavery and selective enforcement of large swaths of its laws, is dead and buried.

We cannot undo the Civil War and the choices we made in the long process of bringing the nation back together. To do so will rip the nation apart again. The project to invalidate the Reconstruction Amendments and the Civil Rights laws that followed is a project of American annihilation.

The fact that a large swath of conservatives and legal scholars do not see how clearly their course of action will lead to the end of America is genuinely frightening.
