Lover of plants, cats and good food | PhD student @OxfordEcosystem @ecioxford interested in impacts of climate extremes on Savannas | very proud 🇿🇦 in 🇬🇧
End of the second week of my training for my first half marathon. Prioritising moving my body was one of my goals for my PhD - not all PhD goals have to be academic. Today I found the most beautiful little running path through a nature park in Oxford.
This news article, sent to me by my mother (thanks mom for keeping me up to date with SA news), has made my day! Having Debra Roberts at the helm of the @IPCC_CH would be a win for climate change, Africa, the Global South and women in STEM. https://t.co/kc6R1vrhBD
Looking forward to hearing from @RemoteReefs this Friday and discovering what we can learn from the study of remote coral reefs. In person and online 4.15pm in the School of Geography @oxfordgeography@ECI_bio@OxfordBiology https://t.co/BApd2vuoWK
When the Reuters list of the top 1000 Climate scientists of the world featured only 5 Africans (all male) I was shocked and massively disappointed. The article by @IndraOverland, @NickZimson, @christrisos and co. in this thread reveals why this is the case.
From 1990–2019, research on Africa received only 3.8% of climate-related research funding globally.
Of this 3.8% funding for climate research on Africa, 78% went to EU and North American institutions, while African institutions received only 14.5%.
But mostly I’ve learnt that the people you meet along the way will be the best part! I’ve had the pleasure of bumping into some incredible people over the past 2 months who have inspired me! @nHumidity@FunkyAnt @SallyArchibald thank you for the encouragement during this trip.
Today is the last day of my first field campaign for my PhD. This has been a tough trip with a ton of learning. Bad weather, equipment problems, permit delays, a vehicle swop for size issues, and a crushed toe are among the things that have gone wrong. But.. (1/3)
I have also learnt so much from this trip. I’ve learnt to just go with it and be flexible in the field, having driven all over the country in immediate response to granting of permits and reserve availability, and how to troubleshoot some pretty advanced equipment. (2/3)
Fully set up in a Terminalia sericea grove today at @Tswalu to test the temperature response of young trees to current and future predicted temperatures using the @LICOR_ENV Li-6800. Loving the mobile pressure bombing set up! @TswaluFdn@OxfordEcosystem
Are you an engaged South African postgraduate student looking to work in the field of plant hydraulics and ecophysiology? Are you excited about plants and how they function in natural, agricultural or urban settings? Please get in touch with me (sending a CV would be great).
Thank you @NatureRecovery for making my talk available for those that could not attend in person. I took stock of good things, bad things and the role of social narratives in the #KMGBF... surely not everyone will agree!
