In July 2023, archaeologists working in the center of Rome uncovered an intact marble head believed to have belonged to a life-size statue of a female deity.

The discovery was made during work at Piazza Augusto Imperatore, near the Mausoleum of Augustus.

Carved from Greek marble, the head may represent Aphrodite. It has an elaborate hairstyle, with the hair gathered at the back and held in place by a taenia, a ribbon tied over the head.

The head was discovered incorporated into the foundations of a Late Antique wall. It had been reused as building material and was lying face-down, protected by a layer of clay.

This unusual position helped preserve the sculpture remarkably well.

At the time of the discovery, the head was sent to restorers for cleaning and to archaeologists for further identification and study. An initial assessment suggested that it dates to the Augustan period, around 2,000 years ago.
