Meet David.
David earns ₦700,000 a month.

His office has a particular culture.
Everyone takes Bolt.
Everyone eats out.
Everyone has an iPhone.
Everyone travels.
Everyone appears to be doing well.

David initially ignored it.

Then someone mocked his phone.
David upgraded.

Another colleague asked why he is still living on the mainland.
David moved.

He over heard some colleagues talking about the smell of the food people bring from home.
David started ordering food.

Nobody told him to do any of this.
There was simply an unspoken standard.

David's income increased.
But his financial position didn't.

He was earning more but saving almost nothing.

This is how social comparison works.
You don't have to be jealous of someone to imitate them.

Sometimes you simply start believing that"This is what people at my level are supposed to have."

But your colleagues don't know your bank balance.

They don't know your debts.

They don't know your family obligations.

And they won't fund your retirement.

You don't have to look successful to be successful.

Let other people compete over appearances.

You should be competing against your old financial position.

More savings.
More investments.
Less debt.
More assets.
More options.

The person who looks richest in the office may not be the richest person in the office.

When I was a child, many families were kept entertained. Many homes had TVs. Even in "face me I face you", at least two people in that compound had a TV. There were also free series on national TV that we could follow. Parents and Children had something to look forward to after a long day. 

Even if families were not wealthy, they had a sense of hope, they could at least eat twice every day even if they had to let their kids drink garri from a big bowl with the other kids in the afternoon. There was survival and interdependence. 

When I became a teenager, the country started moving upward, there was the introduction of TV subscriptions like DSTv, GoTv, etc. and we would watch different shows. We could still debate aspects of our favorite shows even up until 2020. But that shifted. MultiChoice, the parent company of DStv and GOtv, reported losing 1.4 million subscribers in Nigeria over a two-year stretch leading into 2025. This meant that viewers shifted away from traditional pay-TV toward cheaper internet streaming alternatives. (That is why every fintech today ends up selling data and airtime, but sorry, I digress). This means that everyone is on the internet either trying to entertain or be entertained. 

Our entertainment trap that used to last at least 3-4 months before people started feeling the impact of the economy again, has now significantly reduced. People are less and less distracted from the realities of the hardship they are facing. Now, most distractions last 3 days at best - Mr. P, Wedding ceremonies, whatever went viral for the day. By morning everyone is back facing the reality of pain, hunger, joblessness.

That joblessness and the need to entertain for survival is what has fueled events like this. The content creator has posted to entertain his audience and get views and comments. The car spotters and beggars have seen that if you stand in certain places you can both entertain and beg...but it is also attracting the people who are not there to entertain anyone at all.

So, how long do you think it would be before we start having associations of car spotters all over the country? Association of beggars and the Lords they have to remit to? Then they start waiting by the gates of the so-called rich men? Because soon being on the road will become saturated and they have to "innovate"?

Don't forget that we have the ones manufacturing illicit drugs, kidnapping, removing the iron in the pillars that hold different bridges. How long before a major collapse of infrastructure? 

Even in a country where the politicians have decided that human lives hold no value, they must at least understand that they are playing with multiple fires all at once right? Anyway, he who doesn't hear, must feel.

My previous job, I was the Head of Operations and it's only myself and the CFO that can send invoice out to partners and suppliers.

I employed a sales manager who was performing well but he was suspicious anyways after 2 years he decided to leave.

A month after he left I got mail that we didn't fulfill the services a bigger company paid for... What do you mean? After a lot of back and forth cos I couldn't find any engagement with this company.

They sent the invoice we sent to them, Omo this sales manager cloned our companys invoice and put his own account details there. He defrauded them of 1m naira.

Na Abule Egba police DPO I call... Dem arrest this guy and he confessed. Well he paid the money, they asked me if I want to charge him to court. Who has that time? Told them to leave him.

We operate in a close space and everyone knows everyone. Since 2022 this guy has not gotten a job in that field. Recently someone wants to employ him they reached out to me as his former manager.

I told the CEO, if you love yourself, your mental health and most importantly your business - this guy is a THIEF!!!

He lost that lucrative opportunity!

Blame the govt but most of these people are Thieves!!!
