La historia se centra en Sam, un padre de familia que desaparece de repente en el jardín de su casa tras presenciar una extraña luz en el cielo. Tres años después, regresa con su familia.

El director Harry Bromley Davenport admitió en varias entrevistas que él y sus coguionistas estaban bajo los efectos de las drogas mientras escribían el guion. Esto explica por qué añadían de forma improvisada ideas inconexas que se les ocurrían en el momento, como la aparición de una pantera o los juguetes cobrando vida.

The Evil Dead (1981)

A landmark independent supernatural horror film written and directed by a then-20-year-old Sam Raimi. Produced on a shoestring budget, it defied commercial expectations to gross $29.4 million worldwide, launched a massive media franchise, and established itself as one of the most celebrated cult classics in cinematic history.

The idea for the movie originated from the creative partnership of Sam Raimi, producer Robert Tapert, and actor Bruce Campbell, who grew up making Super-8 short films together. To secure financing for a feature-length horror movie, they shot a 32-minute horror short titled Within the Woods (1978).

Serving as a direct proof of concept, they screened this short for local businessmen and potential investors. The strategy worked, allowing them to raise roughly $90,000 to begin production under the working title The Book of the Dead. Over its multi-year development and editing cycle, the total final budget grew to approximately $375,000.

Principal photography took place in late 1979 and early 1980 in a genuinely remote, dilapidated cabin in Morristown, Tennessee. The shoot is legendary for being a miserable and physically painful experience for the cast and crew:

The cabin had no running water or heating. To stay warm during freezing winter nights, the crew resorted to burning old furniture.

Special effects artist Tom Sullivan utilized rudimentary, over-the-top practical effects. He mixed vast quantities of fake blood, syrup, and snot, which constantly dried and stuck to the actors.

The demonic "Deadite" look required thick, opaque white contact lenses that severely restricted the actors' vision and were incredibly painful to wear. Accidents were rampant on set.

After a private hometown premiere in Detroit in October 1981, major American distributors initially turned down the film due to its extreme, graphic violence. The film's trajectory completely changed when veteran producer Irvin Shapiro took it to the 1982 Cannes Film Festival.

Author Stephen King attended the screening and published a rave review in Twilight Zone magazine, famously calling it "the most ferociously original horror film of the year". This massive endorsement convinced New Line Cinema to pick up the domestic distribution rights. It was given a wide theatrical release in April 1983 and became a sleeper hit.

Today, The Evil Dead is widely regarded as a cinematic masterpiece of independent filmmaking. It completely transformed the "cabin in the woods" trope into a staple of modern horror pop culture.

The film turned Bruce Campbell into a permanent B-movie icon for his role as Ash Williams, a character who evolved across multiple sequels—Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness—from a terrified survivor into a chainsaw-wielding, wise-cracking action hero. Decades later, its relentless energy, boundary-pushing gore, and dark humor continue to influence generations of horror filmmakers.
