I hear this argument a lot. They will pick a particular place that has experienced profound change - in this case, Stoke-on-Trent - and claim that multiculturalism "works" there.
I hear the same claim about Dagenham, where I grew up, and which has undergone massive demographic transformation.
But what do they mean when they say "it works"? If they mean that the different cultures aren't at each other's throats constantly, that's probably true.
But what if those cultures rarely interact? What if they live in segregated neighbourhoods? What if they never frequent the same places: shops, pubs, institutions, etc?
The absence of overt hostility is not proof that "multiculturalism works". Neither is mere toleration. And they shouldn't be presented as such.
The truth is that many of our "multicultural" towns are deeply fragmented, with people from different cultures living largely parallel lives. Occasionally they'll interact (such as the example this guy cites of people going to a West African bar on a Friday night). And that's to be welcomed. But often they don't.
There's an argument to say that what exists in these places is not multiculturalism at all. It is instead a cluster of isolated monocultures. And that isn't healthy.
(PS. Stoke-on-Trent experienced race riots in 2001. I suspect this chap doesn't remember them.)
