As someone who has spent years trying to create a dignified market for Kenyan developers, I think we should be celebrating founders who are building their own products using AI.
Look at what Mbiti has done with Aluta. Why should he spend KSh 500,000 or even KSh 3 million hiring developers to build something he hasn't validated? Having a working product doesn't guarantee sales. Many of us have built technically brilliant applications that nobody wanted to pay for. By building it himself, Mbiti has saved money that he can now spend on marketing, acquiring customers and validating the business.
And what many devs don't seem to get is that if Aluta succeeds, Mbiti will eventually face technical challenges that require experienced engineers. But instead of asking investors for KSh 10 million to build an untested idea, he can now say, "We have 10,000 paying customers, our infrastructure can't keep up, and I need KSh 10 million to hire engineers who can help us scale and cut server costs by 50%." That's a much better problem to have, and a more compelling case for investment.
I think developers need to appreciate this. Let founders who understand their markets validate their ideas as cheaply as possible. Our opportunity comes when those ideas succeed and need SERIOUS ENGINEERING EXPERTISE
Mimi hapa, I'm positioning Reduzer to support founders like Mbiti and Kairo as they grow. Because one successful founder could end up creating two or three dignified, well-paying jobs for Kenyan developers for years.
Kenyans need to understand that Aluta is not a Kenyan kariokor platform,it’s something built for international market.
Sasa if you’re a Dj and going live on TikTok when you can convert your fans to Aluta and make five to ten times more than yours is either ignorance or being slow.
If you have a million YouTube followers and convert Just 10% of those into Aluta and then 10% of those to buy a 50bob stream for your show and some mini adverts in there you’re looking at around 500k shillings in a show.
Aluta is highly commercialized and transactional,we know nobody creates content for fun but to make money.
Imagine my big bro @ombachi13 streaming live while cooking and he charges 100 bob for that stream pass to experience behind the scenes cooking. Let’s say 1000 people pay the 100 bob that’s a cool 100k per stream without charging the other services that can be done on the stream including advertisement and people’s requests.

Promise made. Promise kept.
By tomorrow, 25 million American children will have our gift of $250 in their accounts.
$6.25 billion. Invested in kids. Compounding for decades.
If you have a child under 18, claim their account and see how much is in there now.
$250 is only the beginning. 🇺🇸
my prediction:
personal ai agents won’t monetize through monthly subscription fees.
they’ll monetize by owning the fintech stack and earning revenue every time their users spend money.
Instinct already measures internal performance based on monthly payment volume.
to monetize this they can:
> issue their own Visa credit card
> earn 2-3% interchange on every transaction
> negotiate bulk discounts directly with merchants
> take a percentage of the savings they generate
> earn yield on balances sitting inside the ecosystem
instead of charging you $20/month to use your personal agent, the agent becomes the interface through which you spend thousands of dollars every month.
if your agent books your flights, hotels, restaurants, and everyday purchases, owning the payment layer underneath becomes far more valuable than a $20/month subscription.
the biggest personal ai companies will end up looking less like software companies and more like fintechs.
personal ai agents + fintech will eventually blend into an entirely new category:
agentic finance.
yes we over-hired during covid because i incorrectly built 2 separate company structures (square & cash app) rather than 1, which we corrected mid 2024. but this misses all the complexity we took on through lending, banking, and BNPL. and that we’re now targeting $2M+ gross profit per person, 4x our pre-covid efficiency, which stayed flat at ~$500k from 2019 until 2024. we have and do run an efficient company... better than most.
Somewhere, at this very moment, someone appears to be doing better than you. Their progress is faster. Perhaps their business grows more quickly or their career is advancing rapidly. Maybe dating is easy for them or their progress in the gym seems to come effortlessly. In any domain, there is always another life that shimmers more than your own.
But comparison is a poor use of energy. You were not meant to inhabit someone else's story. You have your own work to do. The goal is not to beat their life, the goal is to live your life. Keep your eyes on your own paper. Stay on the path and continue forward, even when progress feels slow.

My son Dimitri—an undergrad in my department—is taking my course this semester. Imagine not doing homework or skipping class, and you gotta face your professor at home?🤭 Last time we were in class together, I was teaching Spanish at UCLA with him inside my belly😁🎓#DrMama
