I’m spending a lot of my time debunking fake IRS letters- really good fakes. And more time dealing with real IRS letters that are just wrong and confusing to my clients. Why am I in this business, again?

I’m just a few chapters in and I’m learning. This is clear and so comprehensive. Things I knew but wasn’t really sure about, lots of studies and statistics but not overwhelming. Shaping up to be a top-shelf book. Exercise beats GLP-1, 10,000 steps a day is not scientific - 2,500 can be just as good, supplements are sometimes helpful but way overrated, and thank goodness caffeine is still on the healthy list.

Well it’s come to a point with me that I’m in life-changing-decision mode now. I’m a nice, laid back guy (everybody I like tells me so) and that’s not how I felt and acted throughout tax season this year. Thought, and probably said out loud, some disturbing things. Clues that this job I created for myself needs serious adjustments. Lots of good comments and info on this thread, healthy conversations we all need to start having and sharing.

I’m planning to do the scheduling process next year and I fear my experience will be similar to yours. I know some clients will like it, but I also know some don’t like to schedule anything, meetings or phone calls even. But I’m to the point that I have to recreate my job, or I will burn out like many of the examples I’ve heard about and seen on this thread. I decided I’m okay with losing some clients - even several good, profitable clients- and taking the financial hit rather than paying so much more with my health and life.

Biggest 2025 disappointment for SE taxpayers: Tip-income deduction doesn’t always mean a lower tax bill.

If federal income tax is already at zero, there may be nothing left for the deduction to reduce. And it doesn’t change self-employment tax — the Social Security and Medicare tax many clients pay on self-employed income.

I’m bad about forcing myself to finish a book, even if I can tell it’s not teaching me anything or entertaining me at all. If it’s nonfiction, I just hate the idea of possibly missing something that could be beneficial just because I didn’t have the patience to dig deep enough for it.
