Watch closely right now, because you're seeing something rare: Republicans in Congress publicly flinching away from Donald Trump. Rep. Mike Lawler calling the Iran war "not small potatoes" on national TV. Rep. Tim Burchett cracking jokes about being "backwards and poor." Rep. Tom Barrett skipping the Dallas midterm convention entirely. The GOP is reportedly so desperate to avoid empty seats at that convention that they're texting away free tickets after charging $25,000 for admission — and still can't fill the room.

Don't mistake this for a conscience. It's a poll number.

None of these lawmakers had a problem with Trump when he was actually doing the damage. They didn't distance themselves when the "Big Beautiful Bill" ripped healthcare coverage away from millions of people. They didn't distance themselves while families were being torn apart by an immigration crackdown that grabbed people who'd committed no crime beyond wanting a better life. They didn't distance themselves through six months of war in Iran, a $1.25 billion "Board of Peace" fund with nothing to show for it, a Qatari jet paid for partly by raiding nuclear modernization money, or a parade of pardons for donors and grifters.

They stood behind him with thumbs up and a big smile. They eagerly voted for it, they fundraised off of it.

What changed isn't the behavior. It's the calendar.

Now the midterms are close enough to taste, and suddenly the same members who spent a year rubber-stamping Trump's agenda and cheering afterwards are worried about being seen next to him.

Kevin Madden, the Republican strategist quoted in the Financial Times, basically said the quiet part out loud: members go home, hear from voters about affordability and inflation — if they have the guts to even hold a townhall — come back to Washington, and then Trump torches whatever message discipline they tried to build — like calling rising prices and dead soldiers from his own war of choice "small potatoes," or telling rural communities they'll be "backwards and poor" if they don't want AI data centers built next to their homes. This is always who he was. He did not suddenly change. He was always a narcissist and a fraud.

The only difference is Republicans’ jobs are on the line. And if they lose, they can’t keep screwing you over as they have knowingly done for the last 2 years.

This is not accountability. This is triage.

There's no retraction of a single vote, no return of a single dollar diverted from disaster relief or nuclear modernization, no apology to a single family that lost a parent to ICE. There's just a sudden, urgent interest in not being photographed next to him three months before an election.

If Republicans actually believed any of this was wrong, they had two years to say so. They said nothing. The ONLY republicans to speak out are those retiring or who already lost.

What we're watching now isn't a party rediscovering its values — it's a party trying to survive the consequences of never having any to begin with.

They didn't learn. They got caught.
