James Mangold was spiteful towards Crystal Skull just like how JJ Abrams was with the Star Wars prequels. He went out of his way to not only undo the ending of Crystal Skull but kill off Indy's son Mutt in a mean spirited way off screen. It would've been very easy to have simply had a line about Mutt having his own life and being in a relationship but Mangolds resentment towards the character led to what we ended up getting.
