A client of mine landed on that truth this week. He has been running a profitable creative agency for years. Real clients. Real margins. Real team.
He started the call wanting to talk about creative testing. He ended the call building toward something else: an asset-owned model.
The numbers explained the shift. An agency at $1M/yr trades at 1-2x. A holdco that owns small profitable assets, run by the same team, trades at 4-6x. Same operators. Same hours. Different multiple.
This is the conversation most agency owners avoid because admitting it is uncomfortable. The agency you built is a job that pays well. It is not a business in the way a buyer counts it. The customers are the founder's relationships. The IP is in the founder's head. The team comes with the founder or it does not come at all.
There is no shame in this. The agency is a vehicle that worked. It paid the bills, taught the operator how to operate, built the team they would have killed for at 25.
The next move is the harder one. Use the cash flow to buy or build an asset that does not require you. Run the agency for as long as it serves the next thing.
The agency is not the destination. It is the runway.
