More alfalfa assessment in western Wisconsin. Rotations and field plans are changing as winterkill has caused fields that that had planned to stay in alfalfa to be rotated out to corn.
When assessing alfalfa stand make sure you dig up plants and assess crown health. Taproot should be firm and white. If you can easily squeeze water out the plant, even if there is new green growth, the plant is dead
Alfalfa fields are greening up in western Wisconsin. Spots are showing some winterkill. Now is the time to walk alfalfa fields and do plant counts. Need a minimum of 4-5 plants/ sq. ft. foot on older stands or rotate out. Target 12 plants/ sq. ft. on alfalfa seeded last year
