It is a truly dark and heartbreaking day for the thousands of hardworking traders who rely on Gikomba Market for their daily bread. In the early hours of this morning, a ferocious fire tore through the market with terrifying speed, leaving vast sections of it in ruins.
Once again, these resilient men and women have been dealt a devastating blow. Goods worth billions of shillings -the hard-earned fruits of their sweat, sacrifice, and dreams -have been reduced to ashes.
The damage represents a significant economic blow to both our city and the nation as a whole, one that will inevitably ripple through livelihoods and local growth.
Gikomba Market has endured repeated unexplained fire outbreaks. Sadly, today’s incident is the largest conflagration the market has ever seen, causing massive losses to traders and their families. In addition, we lost three people and seventeen others were seriously injured.
Nearly 90% of the open market stalls have been completely wiped out, including the destruction of the vibrant Block B & C markets.
I have sent President Ruto a written update on the situation and the plight of those affected, and I have also spoken with Nairobi Governor Sakaja, stressing the urgent need for timely interventions to support the impacted traders.
I should also be making an extended statement on the Gikomba tragedy on the National Assembly early next week.
This afternoon, together with Nairobi North Sub-Regional County Commissioner Osumba, we held an emergency meeting with the leadership of Gikomba Market.
We agreed on immediate next steps, including the deployment of police to secure and protect the market, which remains extremely vulnerable.
