It appears to be fully English with a spelling/usage error that is also a common pet peeve (would of, could of, should of instead of the ‘ve contraction) of English speakers. Her tweet was addressing an American writer so perception matters in this case.

@Monkeytail2002 @MairiMacGilliv1 I’ll grant you that the use of “would of” in the tweet means it’s not fully in English. However, since that is the only use of SSE, I’m sure you can see how it would APPEAR to be an incorrect English spelling rather than a single instance of SSE. In this case, we’re both right.

@Monkeytail2002 @MairiMacGilliv1 I’m not disagreeing with your point about what’s acceptable or correct in Scots or SSE when a Scot is speaking/writing Scots. But her tweeted reply to the author was fully in English with no Scots so the logic for the defense of “would of” in that context doesn’t hold up.

@Monkeytail2002 @MairiMacGilliv1 I agree that Diana ought to retract her ridiculous “clarification” and acknowledge that she’s misinformed about the use of the term “Scotch” but this doesn’t change the fact that “would’ve” is the proper spelling of the contraction for “would have” in Mairi’s reply to the author.

When one is correcting/chastising a writer, spelling & proper language usage go a long way. 🤷🏼‍♀️
