According to Penn State Extension, if a tree is harvested and made into a long-lived wood product, the carbon stored in the wood product is often preserved for a longer time than if it were left to decompose in the forest.

In 2022, about 2.1% of U.S. annual total energy consumption was from wood and wood waste—bark, sawdust, wood chips, wood scrap, and paper mill residues. The usage is expected to grow exponentially as we turn to renewable energy sources to fuel the world.
