SpaceX and Louisiana politicians plan to transform one of the Gulf’s most important bird habitats into the world’s largest space launch site – a decision made without local input or environmental review.

Japan killed 14,000 bears after a rise in deadly attacks on people – but will it work? @guardian
The scale of bear culling in Japan is unrivalled in the modern era 💔
“Bears killed 13 people in Japan last year, as a lack of forest foods increased conflicts. Yet some say the country’s controversial cull could threaten the endangered species”
Tragic how humankind destroy habitats and then destroy the animals who leave their homes to seek food

Compulsory Purchase Order or lose the UK’s most historic grassroots arts street. That’s the choice. The very soul of Brummie cultural DNA continues to rot away. Inaction is complicity.
Dolly taught us that you can be anything and do anything and to do it with kindness. What a light. We are all grateful that we lived in a time of Dolly Parton. We will always love her.
🚨 464 former MPs now have passes giving them unescorted access to Parliament, up from 330 in just two years.
Some left the Commons nearly 40 years ago.
Liz Truss and most of her former Cabinet still have them.
Parliament is supposed to belong to the people not operate as a lifelong private members’ club for former politicians and their networks.
It’s worse than that . Finch said he was acting on “a number” of complaints from local people. So Labour MP Rachel Taylor asked the council for the actual figures. There have been no complaints. If you lied like this in a normal job you’d be sacked. Why are our journos who’ve🧵
Hey @andyburnham hope you enjoyed the Everton game. Any chance you could step up here and save the UK’s most historically important arts street before Everton play Villa in December? Will buy you a pint and a pie if you do (not bribery though!!)
Samreen just sent me this incredible poem from Afghanistan. She's stuck in a boiling hot attic with on/off electricity and a marginal internet connection. She will see if you like her poem though, and it will help.
Yesterday was Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin & Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy’s birthdays
They were both born in Hallam Hospital, West Bromwich. Exactly 1yr apart in 1948 and 1949. Both would later develop early associations with The Crown Pub (Home of Black Sabbath) & become megastars

UKHSA is investigating a Salmonella outbreak involving 207 confirmed cases which may be linked to imported eggs.
The Food Standards Agency says:
“There is no evidence that UK-produced eggs are affected.”
And where were the suspected imported eggs mainly being used?
Restaurants, cafés and catering establishments.
The Brexit promise to escape EU regulations always meant dangerously lower food standards. Traceability and border controls protect the public.
Consumers cannot Buy British when they aren’t even told the origin of ingredients used in the food they are served.
Brexit Britain has weaker import controls and we have pursued cheaper global food imports. This is destroying food security and putting lives at risk.
Food security means food safety too.
We should be strengthening British food production and demanding robust equivalence and verification from imports, not treating food regulation as an inconvenience to trade.

We’re watching the Taliban celebrating five years of power in Afghanistan and hundreds have taken to the streets of the capital Kabul. It is the country the UN has described as the most repressive in the world for women and girls. Women and girls are banned from schools from aged 12; they’re barred from most work and public spaces. They’re not allowed to do sport. After more than two decades of reporting from the country through invasion, occupation and now a return to Taliban rule, it’s clear the regime is tightening its grip on power. Human rights advocates say there should be no engagement with the Taliban until women’s rights are restored
Arts A-levels: still vanishing 🚨
In 2010, roughly 1 in every 6.5 A-level entries was in the arts. Today, it's 1 in 10.
Every single subject we track now accounts for a smaller share of entries than it did in 2010 👇
Remember Afghanistan? Remember the Taliban? They’ve been in power for five years now. And during those years the Taliban authorities have systematically stripped women and girls of virtually all their rights - in the name of religion. The rules upon rules have resulted in the “world’s most severe women’s rights crisis”, as described by the gender equality agency UN Women .
