THE RESCUE MISSION IS TAKING SHAPE — ZAMFARA’S QUIET TRANSFORMATION

When Governor Dauda Lawal took office in May 2023, Zamfara was not starting from a position of strength. Insecurity had disrupted farming and economic activities, rural roads were in poor condition, schools and hospitals needed serious attention, and many communities had lost confidence in the ability of government to deliver.

The response was not to pretend that these problems could disappear overnight. The Rescue Mission was built around rebuilding the foundations of the state—security, agriculture, infrastructure, education, healthcare, economic opportunity and human welfare.

And that is why the story of this administration should not be measured only by the number of projects commissioned. The bigger story is what these projects are designed to achieve.

More than ₦22.5 billion has reportedly been committed to rural roads across the 14 LGAs, while major routes such as the approximately 105-kilometre Gusau–Magami–Dansadau road are aimed at improving connectivity and making it easier for people and agricultural products to move.

For a state where agriculture remains central to the livelihood of millions, roads are not just roads. They connect farmers to markets. Markets connect producers to consumers. Irrigation extends farming opportunities. Mechanisation improves productivity. Storage and processing reduce losses and increase value. Together, these interventions can create jobs, strengthen household incomes and expand the state’s economic base.

The planned development of 40 new markets comprising 4,000 shops is another part of this wider economic strategy. The objective is not simply to construct structures, but to create an ecosystem where farmers, traders, processors and businesses can participate more effectively in the economy.

Perhaps what deserves even greater attention is the attempt to think beyond a single political cycle. The Zamfara State Development Plan 2025–2034 provides a longer-term framework for agriculture, agro-processing, employment, food security and private-sector development.

Of course, Zamfara’s problems have not disappeared. There is still a lot of work to be done. But rebuilding a state weakened by years of insecurity and underdevelopment was never going to be achieved in one day.

The real question is whether the rebuilding has started. And from the roads to agriculture, markets, healthcare, education and long-term planning, there is a growing body of work to examine.

A second term would therefore be about continuity: giving ongoing programmes the opportunity to mature, allowing long-term plans to be implemented, and ensuring that the foundations being laid today can produce lasting results tomorrow.

Zamfara deserves development that outlives political cycles. The Rescue Mission must not only start the rebuilding—it must have the continuity required to complete it.

8. Nasarawar Godel Flood and Erosion Control – Designs and estimates.
9. Construction of 5 No. prototype primary schools in selected locations – Designs and estimates completed.
10. Construction of 5 No. prototype basic health centres in selected locations – Designs and estimates completed.
11. Rehabilitation of Government Day Secondary School (GDSS) Birnin Magaji – Completed.
