As Ghana moves forward with it's anti-LGBTIQ bill, it's important to acknowledge what Parliament hasn't passed: legislation protecting the property rights of spouses, constitutionally mandated since 1993, that would meaninfully protect families. So, the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill is not really about family values. We call on regional and international partners to stand with LGBTIQ+ Ghanaians and maintain pressure at this critical moment.

The MP sponsoring this bill stood in committee and asked why Ghana has AIDS.

Speaker Bagbin announced that Parliament arranged accommodation, security, and logistics for foreign delegates attending this conference. Ghana is dealing with debt restructuring and fiscal pressure. Taxpayers deserve to know exactly how much this cost. #GhanaCheckYourAura
The so-called "African Charter on Family, Sovereignty and Values" was drafted by Christian Council International, a Netherlands-based organisation. A Dutch organisation wrote your African values. Let that sink in. #GhanaCheckYourAura
Consequently, Mozambique called for wider, necessary consultations among its government, parliament, and domestic stakeholders before committing to the charter.
A law that creates fear around seeking healthcare affects everyone. Public health works best when people can access services without fear of stigma, suspicion or punishment. #BackToSender
The exemptions proposed for health workers, lawyers and other professionals are not enough. In practice, fear and discrimination can still prevent people from accessing essential services. #BackToSender
Calling queerness “un-African” falls apart when Ghanaian languages already carry terms like kojo besia and supi. You can debate policy, but don’t erase culture and history to do it. #BackToSender#GhanaCheckYourAura
One careless “I heard…” can destroy a life. One brave voice can protect it. Choose courage over rumors. Speak up. Stand up. Protect each other.

While some claim same-sex relationships are foreign to Ghanaian culture, terms like “supi” have long existed in parts of southern Ghana to describe intimate relationships between women. History and language often tell a more nuanced story. #GhanaCheckYourAura
Real question: When will Parliament be as urgent about floods and broken ambulances as they are about criminalizing LGBTQIA+ people? #GhanaCheckYourAura#BackToSender
Young African women and LGBTQ youth have the most to lose from this charter. Maputo Protocol protections gone. Continental criminalization normalized. Your entire adult lives lived under this framework if we do not stop it now. #GhanaCheckYourAura#ProtectTheMaputoProtocol
