‘What inspired you to set up Oasis, with all its housing & schools, healthcare & community work etc? And what keeps you going?’ I got asked yesterday. It’s probably the question I’m posed most often. So, here’s my answer. Aged 14 I was inspired by Jesus & his message. I still am!

Will I offer peace today?
Will I bring a smile to someone’s face?
Will I say words of healing?
Will I let go of my anger and resentment?
Will I forgive?
Will I love?
These are the biggest questions.
Based on the words of Henri Nouwen
We should measure the prosperity of a nation not by the number of millionaires, but by the absence of poverty, the prevalence of health, the inclusion of its education system, the care it offers to its most vulnerable members, and the equality of opportunity it extends to all.
In 2013, 38% of Church of England members supported same-sex marriage.
In 2015 - 45%.
In 2020 - 48%.
This year - 55%.
The gentle tide of inclusion is sweeping in.
The sandcastle of exclusion is crumbling fast.
Even sincerely held belief never excuses the oppression of another.
While the UK is resisting Ukrainian refugees, more and more small + medium-businesses face a serious labour shortage after-Brexit – and little prospect of local recruitment to fill the gap – with consequences right across the supply chain. We need more openness to immigration.
Whenever the Church ceases to speak up for justice & instead aligns itself uncritically to the state, it betrays itself. Eg. the German Christian Movement & Hitler, white American Evangelicalism & Trump, Russian Orthodoxy & Putin. As Jesus said, ‘You can’t serve God and Empire.’
The way I see it, the opposition of some in the Church to same-sex marriage is depressing and, even more than that, cruel & abusive! However, the gentle tide of LGBT inclusion is coming in - indeed it is unstoppable - and that stubborn sandcastle of resistance is crumbling fast!!
Whether we are black, white, short, tall, plump, thin, rich, poor, gay, straight, old or young, left, right, eastern or western, we belong together.
We will agree. We will disagree. But we all remain interdependent. We need each other.
We are of one race - the human race.
