2 KIDNAPPED VICTIMS RESCUED, 2 SUSPECTS ARRESTED

Two women who were abducted a week ago were rescued yesterday, following an operation conducted by a joint team of sleuths drawn from the Crime Research & Intelligence Bureau and the Operations branch.

Erica Gachoka, 26 daughter of media personality Ciku Muiruri and her friend Shanice Agose, 27 went missing on June 4, after attending a house party in Nairobi’s Westlands area.

After the party, the two requested a ride to Kilimani, via the bolt taxi application. But when the ride arrived along Rhapta road in Westlands and they got in, the driver threatened them using a hammer before speeding off towards Thika.

Investigations into the abduction were immediately launched as the detectives trailed the suspects who operated between Nairobi, Thika, Ruiru and Witeithie in Kiambu County. The abductors demanded for a ransom of Sh250,000 from each of the two, in order to release them.

Yesterday, the officers raided a house in Ngoigwa area in Thika, where two suspects Timothy Kiragu, 34 and Samuel Kipkurui, 33 were arrested. After a brief interview, the duo led detectives to Gatukuyu in Mang’u, Kiambu County, where the two women were rescued.

Assorted crude weapons and fake motor vehicle number plates were recovered from the suspects.

Meanwhile, the visibly weak and shaken victims who were found in a one-roomed house where they had been locked up have since been reunited with their families.

CROSS BORDER VEHICLE SMUGGLING KINGPIN SENTENCED TO 55 YEARS IMPRISONMENT

The National Commissioner of the South African Police Service( SAPS), General Fannie Masemola has welcomed the conviction of Vusi Amos Zulu Malwane, a cross border vehicle smuggling kingpin that was terrorising communities in Northern KwaZulu-Natal.

44-year-old Malwane has been sentenced to a collective 55 years imprisonment for kidnapping (6 years), robbery with aggravating circumstances (hijacking, 30 years) possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition (15 years).

For more than a decade , Malwane led a syndicate that was behind a spate of motor vehicle hijacking incidents in Emanguzi and surrounding areas. He would thereafter smuggle the vehicles into neighbouring, Mozambique through various borders in the province.

He escaped from lawful custody in 2014 and was rearrested by the Emanguzi cross border operation task team deployed by the National Commissioner to clamp down on cross border crimes, including vehicle theft, on 09 May 2023.

General Masemola says the task team continues to register commendable progress with the arrest of 75 suspects since its deployment four months ago.

“Following our interventions and deployments to the area, 37 vehicles have since been recovered and 27 firearms recovered with 321 rounds of ammunition seized”, said Gen Fannie Masemola.

The Ingwavuma Regional Court also sentenced Malwane to 4 years imprisonment for escaping from lawful custody.
