We can’t wait any longer. With over 50 partners today @savechildrenuk urges the new PM to #FixThisCrisis and increase Universal Credit and benefits. Permanently.
Why is the cost of living crisis wreaking such havoc?
On one level it’s obvious: prices.
On another it’s about exposure. New @jrf_uk work charts the deepening of poverty over 20 yrs. People in very deep poverty rose to 6.5m pre-pandemic.

Big opportunity for Gov today. @savechildrenuk’s tests for the #costofliving package:
✅ Targeted – at those on lowest incomes + families w/ children
✅ Sufficient - large enough to make a genuine difference to household budgets (£10bn can’t be a mixture of stuff for everyone)
Yesterday’s ofgem announcement means that if overall inflation reaches 10% later this year the poorest will be facing 14% inflation because they spend such a large fraction of their budget on energy.
Their benefits are up 3%.
Inflation overall is 9%. But our analysis suggests that the poorest are facing an inflation rate or around 11%. That’s because they spend a large fraction of their budget on energy and food. Their benefits of course rose by just 3.1%.
"But we need to be clear about the nature of the current crisis. Targeted action to help families keep their heads above water should be the priority right now.
That inevitably means strengthening social security."

Weirdest part about the “move to a better-paid” job argument is that the lower paid job you vacate will need to be filled by someone else.
Just shifting the issue to another person rather than tackling it.
A government minister has suggested that people struggling with the cost of living should take on more hours or move to a better-paid job.

.@DanPaskins 🗣️“The cost-of-living crisis is an emergency the UK government should be dealing with right now. The #QueensSpeech was a major opportunity to support those most affected by rising costs, and the government didn’t take it."
