The Nairobi Securities Exchange Plc (NSE) wishes to notify investors and the general public
that, pursuant to Clause 9.4.2(c) of the NSE Equity Trading Rules, and with the approval of the
Capital Markets Authority (CMA), trading in the ordinary shares of Absa Bank Kenya Plc will
be temporarily halted on Wednesday, 19 August 2026, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Investors tossed a staggering Kes 460.4 billion worth of bids for the hat trick IFB reopening against the Kes 150.0 billion ask.
Amount accepted by the government is Kes 312.03 billion with a careful calibration being exercised (competitive bids at Kes 168.04 billion against Kes 143.99 billion in non-competitive bids).
There's a new ETF coming to market - the WSA Banking Index ETF by @kenyanwalstreet & Tridiam Asset Managers.
The market regulator says, "The ETF will seek to replicate, as closely as practicable, the performance of the designated NSE Banking Index by investing all its assets in the constituent banking sector shares comprising the Index".
Taxpayers, take note!
The High Court has set the bar high with regard to the quality of data & the manner in which it is presented when a taxpayer disputes an assessment by KRA.
The High Court says that...
"...the law does not require the Kenya Revenue Authority to play the role of a forensic accountant. When a taxpayer is asked to explain why its own declarations do not add up, the taxpayer must provide a clear, specific, and indexed reconciliation. Flooding the revenue authority with unindexed, chronologically mismatched files is not an act of compliance; it is an evasion of a taxpayer’s evidential duty"
The High Court has consequently overturned the judgement of the Tax Appeals Tribunal delivered on 10th November, 2023 in Appeal No/1178 of 2022, effectively paving way for a Kes 29,208,766 assessment against Jakoline Enterprises Ltd.
The Tax Appeals Tribunal had held that by providing bulk digital files and bank statements, Jakoline Enterprises Ltd had discharged its burden of proof & therefore shifted the duty to the Kenya Revenue Authority to trace the discrepancies.
The High Court didn't have kind words for the Tax Appeals Tribunal. It says..
"By holding that such unstructured data presentation
shifted the burden back to the state, the Tax Appeals Tribunal committed a profound error of law. The Tribunal's decision was based on a fundamental misapplication of the rules of evidence and cannot be allowed to stand"
This is an extremely consequential judgement for taxpayers.
COOP hit a new all time high of KES 37 today.
We expect the stock will likely surpass the KES 40 mark driven by strong earnings growth into 2026 and expansion plans across East Africa.
The market is re-rating COOP upwards in anticipation of regional expansion across East Africa.
Our target for COOP is KES 38.50.
We will review our valuation for COOP after the release of its HY2026 results on 13th August, 2026.

@kiruti Yes. We are building a petrochemical complex, not just refinery, which will add at value add by at least 50%. Note however that even a $2.5b gdp is ~ 25% of current manufacturing GDP ~$10b ( though I believe it’s underestimated.
UPDATE: The Revenue Authority is lining up a number of changes to buttress Finance Act 2026's introduction of phased out Income Tax Return filing (see quoted tweet).
The authority says it will:
· Abandon the excel file based filing in favour of a purely web based filing system. So taxpayers won't be downloading
· Expand the scope of the AI-powered virtual assistant, Shuru, for more complex filing
· Upgrade iTax ahead of April 30th, 2027 which will be the debut phase of staggered filing of income tax returns
PS:
· Worth noting the authority says there shall be no Incomes & Expenses Validation for the 2026 year of income, apparently it was only for 2025
· Question, how does this align with the Finance Act 2026 amendment to Sec75 of the Tax Procedures Act?
· If the law provides that the taxpayer has the right to confirm or amend a pre-populated return, doesn't it follow that there shall be a validation exercise accompanying this in the case where an amendment is done?

📈 Family Bank's growth story continues to gather momentum ahead of its NSE listing.
Over the last five years, the Bank has more than doubled its Profit After Tax, rising from KES 2.31 billion in 2021 to KES 5.38 billion in 2025. This strong performance reflects sustained growth, operational resilience, and a commitment to delivering long-term value.
🚀 As Family Bank prepares to join the NSE, the numbers tell a compelling story of transformation and growth.
