It's like removing all the fruit and vegetables from a store and saying, "you can eat whatever you want." Knowing that people are going to only be able to eat trash. But they're disguising it as a choice.
Doesn't it feel like every great artist you admire is troubled? Jimi Hendrix and his drug addiction, Ernest Hemingway severely depressed. Many others have deep issues. Theyโre socially inept. Some alcoholics.
Yet they make art that speaks to you. Like no other painter, musician, or author can. Their work seems out of this world, like a mad scientist, whose mind is wired differently than yours.
Iโm here to tell you thatโs bullshit. We are all, including myself, falling for the oldest trick in the book: correlation does not equal causation.
We correlate artistsโ success with their personalities and life experience. The mistake lies in ignoring the one thing each master in any discipline shares โ the thousands of hours iterating on the craft. The best of the best, no matter if they are sober, depressed, addicted to drugs, or all of the above are no exception.
What truly matters, is the amount of time spent exploring & iterating a skill. Itโs what the best do. Itโs part of their lives โโ they don't even think about it. Does it take a troubled childhood to realize that you want to be good at something in particular? Does it take having a personality prone to addiction to fixate on learning something deeper than 99% of people? Possibly. But that doesn't mean everyone who makes memorable art is like that.
The key ingredients are commitment, play, and iteration. Those are boring and take time. โHappyโ people, in aggregate, are probably not as prone to committing to something that requires mastery. And thatโs why we assume only the troubled become world-class.
But life is grey. And there are always exceptions to the rules. Stop limiting yourself. No matter your childhood or personality type, you have the ability to do anything you want in this lifetime. The real question is, will you commit to the journey of mastering what you love?
