Attorney General Todd Blanche announced Thursday that Virginia state Sen. L. Louise Lucas, a powerful Democrat and vocal critic of President Trump, has been indicted on federal charges in connection with an alleged drug trafficking, money laundering and racketeering scheme.

Blanche accused Lucas of putting "her own financial interests before the people she was elected to serve," while FBI Director Kash Patel accused Lucas of using her position in the Virginia Senate to advance the alleged operation, calling it "truly, the epitome of hypocrisy for a public official."

Lucas vowed to fight the charges in a statement on X, writing, "I’ve seen what happens when people in power try to silence those who stand up to them. I spent my life fighting back, and I'm not stopping now."
