🔵You can’t have civilization without civility. 🔵By poking fun at himself when attacked, has Ted Lasso just taught us how to turn Twitter into the world’s premiere marketplace of ideas instead of a battlefield? 🔵I have used Ted’s style of self-deprecation to defang trolls, and I challenge you to use it to make our Twitterverse a better place! 🔵The troll is the biggest obstacle to respectful discourse: they attack, believing that their target does not deserve respect. 🔵It is essential to operate with the understanding that they are not bad people- trolls are intensely passionate and simply need their energy redirected towards pro-social behavior. 🔵Twitter is the ideal place to use self-deprecation to break down barriers: it is a public forum where the entire world can see the exchange. 🔵Put yourself in the troll’s perspective: when you attack someone, and they respond by agreeing with you and sharing a laugh at their own expense, it feels very weird to continue attacking them. 🔵You can fight a troll with equal vitriol or block and ignore them: these are more common paths, but are you here to prove a point, or do you want to connect and make the world a better place? 🔵In addition to humor, showing genuine appreciation for the aggressor’s interests and being kind allow you to lead by example and show that you have forgiven the initial insult and would rather connect. 🔵Go like their pinned tweet, add a friendly comment, then opine on a clever point they made to show appreciation for their interests and hobbies. 🔵Their bio is on display, and they likely have some cool images or videos that you can acknowledge. 🔵Please share your thoughts!
