🌹♥️ Before she was a Golden Girl, Betty White was a 19-year-old volunteer in World War II. In 1941 she put her acting plans on hold and joined the American Women’s Voluntary Services.

By day she drove a PX truck through the hills of Hollywood and Santa Monica, delivering soap, candy, toothpaste, and other supplies to gun emplacements and military posts.

At night she went to recreation-hall dances to talk, play cards, and lift the spirits of young servicemen about to ship out.She kept that chapter of her life for 80 years.

After Betty White died on December 31, 2021, her estate donated her preserved AWVS uniform and shoulder bag to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History.

Inside the bag curators found a 1940s time capsule: blank V-mail letters, gasoline ration stamps, red food ration tokens, unused War Savings booklets, an AWVS makeup compact, green dice, and 29 military insignia—including badges from the Free French and the Soviet Red Army. Many of the pins had been given to her by the servicemen she met.

She even kept a handwritten list of their names.The world knew her as an actress. The bag remembered the teenager who served first.Story based on Smithsonian records. 🇺🇲❤️
