Q: You’ve been praised for 'changing your vocal cords for each project.' It’s clear that you pay attention to the tone and nuance of your voice. Who have you focused on most?

A: I think of characters like Myung-joo from Descendants of the Sun, whose voice and tone stood out, or Ae-ra from Fight for My Way, who was full of affection. I pay a lot of attention to those aspects and prepare diligently. Recently, I’ve focused on expressing Hong Hae-in in Queen of Tears, as she is a character with a wide emotional range, and I wanted to express that well with my voice.

Q: Your acting style is diverse, and it’s obvious in each character. How do you make sure the audience can connect with your portrayal?

A: I try to express each character in a way that resonates visually with the audience. I work hard with the stylist and the crew to create a style that will increase the emotional temperature of the character. 

Q: After 14 years of being in the industry, do you feel more passionate about acting?

A: I’ve become more passionate over time. In the beginning, I approached it with youthful enthusiasm, but as time passes, my desire to act has only grown stronger, and I feel a different kind of intensity than before.

Q: What motivates you the most?

A: It’s my family. They are the strongest force that always allows me to move forward.

Q: Have you made any resolutions for this year?

A: I’ve resolved to be a little more diligent. Not so much in terms of work, but as Kim Ji-won, I want to move more diligently this year.

Q: Is there a moment in your life that you consider a 'classic,' something you'll always remember beautifully?

A: Without a doubt, it’s the fan meeting. It was my first time seeing the immense love from fans in person, and I’ll cherish that memory for the rest of my life."

Q: You received a lot of love for Queen of Tears. Looking back, what has Hong Hae-in left with you?

A: Before I could shake off Hae-in from my heart, I thought about this often: What would Hae-in miss before leaving? What would she think about again? In the end, I came to the conclusion that love is the only thing she would remember.

Q: On the other hand, My Liberation Notes’s Mi-jeong also received a lot of love. Although they seem to be at opposite ends, do you see any similarities between these two characters?

A: Mi-jeong and Hae-in are different in appearance, but they both have warm hearts. Mi-jeong’s warmth is subtle, while Hae-in, though she seems cold outwardly, still carries her own warmth.

Q: In every role I’ve played, I always feel like I’m embracing the character wholeheartedly. They may be flawed and sharp in some ways, but they seem to be lovable women. How do you embrace them?

A: Thank you for feeling that way. I believe everyone has their own sharp edges and flaws. When I look at a script, I focus on the character’s sharpest points first, and I spend a lot of time viewing those aspects with a warm eye. Once I begin to understand the sharp points of the characters I’m playing with my heart, the clues about the character and the work begin to unravel little by little.

A: Looking back on that interview, I often think, "Why was I like that back then?" (laughs). As time goes by, I think the most important thing is to stay true to yourself and do your best in every situation that comes your way.

Q: Do you still go to meetings alone, wearing a hat and keeping a low profile?

A: I’m someone who needs time alone. After meetings, I often walk alone to organize my thoughts, and I like to clear my mind. I’m a free-spirited person in that sense.
