Tim Hortons lobbied to replace Canadian workers — now it’s time to replace them

Tim Hortons says they can’t find workers. Meanwhile, Canadian kids can’t find jobs, and instead of fixing that, Tim Hortons went to Ottawa asking for permission to replace them.

In a May 27, 2024, lobbying letter to then immigration minister Marc Miller, Tim Hortons admits: “without international workers and international students... business would struggle immensely.”

Then comes the ask: raise the Temporary Foreign Worker cap from 20% to 30%.

That’s nearly one in three workers not being Canadian — but they didn’t stop there. The company also pushed for a dedicated food service immigration stream with a pathway to permanent residency, locking in a permanent replacement workforce.

At the same time, they want international students working up to 30 hours a week — hours that used to belong to Canadian teenagers trying to get their first job.

And here’s the most infuriating part: Tim Hortons openly admits these jobs matter. They say these jobs help “develop a wide range of skills and build promising careers” and serve as “a stepping stone to integrate into our country.”

Exactly. That’s why those jobs used to go to Canadian kids.

Instead, youth unemployment is climbing, with nearly one in five young Canadians struggling to find work. Entry-level jobs, the first rung on the ladder, are disappearing.

Strip away the corporate language and it’s simple: lower wages, replace local workers, and lock in a dependent labour pool.

No jobs for our kids? No money from us. It’s time for a boycott.

Word of caution to independence petition canvassers. The increased harassment you are facing is by design. Our opponents want us to react negatively to their taunts, so they can catch us on video.

But it goes deeper than that.

Based on the relevant Alberta electoral legislation (including the Election Act, but more directly the Citizen Initiative Act and Recall Act for petition-related canvassing, as the Election Act provisions do not apply to petition campaigns per official statements from Elections Alberta), the canvasser who reacts negatively to harassment is more likely to face prosecution under these acts.

This is because:

Canvassers are bound by a mandatory Code of Conduct that explicitly prohibits them from engaging in harassing or discriminatory behavior, or making abusive, derisive, threatening, insulting, offensive, or provocative statements, gestures, or actions toward others while canvassing. Violations of this code or the associated regulations can be reported directly to Elections Alberta, which investigates and can lead to fines or other penalties under the acts.

In contrast, (and contrary to popular belief) there are no specific provisions or penalties in these acts for a private citizen harassing a canvasser. Such incidents fall under general criminal law (e.g., Criminal Code sections on harassment or threats), requiring the canvasser to report to local police, with no dedicated electoral enforcement mechanism. Prosecution thresholds under criminal law may also be higher, making it less likely without clear evidence of a crime.

This asymmetry arises because the acts regulate the conduct of participants in the electoral or petition process (like canvassers), but do not extend similar protections or penalties to interference by non-participants in petition contexts.

In Alberta, citizens bravely exercising their democratic right to petition through a citizen initiatives, are held to a higher standard than the very politicians, civil servants, and unhinged hecklers they often challenge.

Democracy's foot soldiers get the rulebook; the powerful and the feral get a free pass. That's not equality under the law. That's a stacked deck.

Myth: Treaty land prevents Alberta independence.

Reality: Treaties 6, 7, and 8 explicitly settled land title over a century ago.

Independence is also an opportunity for First Nations.

They will have the ability to choose from these options:

✅ 1) Treaties continue to be fulfilled by Ottawa
✅ 2) Treaties fulfilled by the new Nation of Alberta
✅ 3) Renegotiate and modernize treaties with Alberta
