One last post about something I wrote yesterday before I put down my phone, enjoy the rest of my day off and get ready for Halloween.
Why did I post? Because a lot of people were tagging me on X about a 60 Minutes story and questioning my integrity. That matters to me.
What happened then? Well, at least 1600 people pressed "like". And I got some positive comments. But, predictably, there was a torrent of negative tweets questioning my - you got it - integrity. Maybe that's just the price in this social media era of defending your work.
But virtually no one who criticised my work cited evidence. There were a couple: you can find my back and forth with one person, who quoted sections of the book I wrote.
Someone else said I described masking as "extreme" on Cross Country Checkup. That seemed odd to me but eventually someone else posted it was on the Jan 8th edition of the show. So I listened to the entire hour and 15 minutes we devoted to Covid that day.
You can find the episode online to check for yourself. Turns out, I never described masking as extreme, either directly or indirectly. I wouldn't have unless I misspoke, which is entirely possible on a live, unscripted show.
One other thing: it was a really strong program. The ID doc who was the main guest provided very good analysis and advice. A virologist talked about the "Kracken" variant (remember the concerns earlier this year?) and nine months later, her analysis stands up. And an emergency department doc talked about what he was seeing in his Ontario hospital. At the end, I asked his advice: keep your shots up to date, test before gathering for parties and wear masks in certain settings.
We have done hours of Covid coverage on Checkup and the National. Our teams work hard to be accurate. I know I can't change the minds of many of the people who replied angrily to yesterday's post. However, since you've read this far, I hope you realize we take this coverage very seriously and our only goal is to get it right.

@RCMPNS I can't believe these comments. An apology to one group does not mean you don't deserve one too if you were wronged. This group has been fighting for this for a long time and in the end it still isn't really enough. You can't undo damage that has been done but this is a start.

Now I can help people. I prefer to build schools and give poor people food or clothing. I have built schools and a stadium, provide clothes, shoes, and food for people in extreme poverty.

In addition, I give 70 euros per month to all people from a very poor Senegalese region in order to contribute to their family economy.

I do not need to display luxury cars, luxury homes, trips, and even planes. I prefer that my people receive some of what life has given me."
