Investigators excavating a Northern California « animal rescue » found the remains of animals, including a horse and dogs, as authorities searched the property for evidence in a widening animal cruelty, fraud and theft investigation.

Humboldt County Sheriff William Honsal said that 730 animals remain unaccounted for after Miranda’s Rescue received more than 900 animals from shelters between January 2025 and this spring.

The FBI, state agencies and forensic experts joined @HumCoSO investigators in serving a second search warrant Tuesday morning at Miranda’s Rescue, a self-described “no-kill” sanctuary that received dogs from shelters, nonprofit organizations and private owners across California.

The warrant authorized investigators to excavate the property “in an effort to locate additional deceased animals” believed to be buried there, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office said. The search marks the most aggressive phase yet in an investigation that began in April, after the sheriff’s office said it received credible information about allegations of felony animal abuse, animal cruelty, fraud and conspiracy involving Miranda’s Rescue.

Miranda’s rescue in California is run by a man who will hopefully rot in the bowels of hell.
He took in animals for funding, shot and killed them and buried them on his property, so he could do the same to more. Near 120 deceased dogs have been recovered, and some 700 animals have been unaccounted for still.
My heart breaks for those poor dogs. The feelings I have towards this waste of oxygen however, are not something I can express without getting into trouble.

Authorities searching Miranda's Rescue uncovered mass graves, suspected killing sites, and hundreds of canine remains.

The case has exposed a little-known part of California's animal welfare system: private rescues that accept animals from overcrowded public shelters, often for transfer fees, while operating outside direct government oversight.

It had contracts or transfer arrangements with various municipal/county animal shelters across California (and at least one mention involving out-of-state), under which it received per-animal fees (often hundreds to thousands of dollars). These are local government or shelter payments—not direct state appropriations or grants. Other shelters and rescues paid these fees to offload animals. The ongoing fraud investigation includes scrutiny of how these funds were used amid the high number of unaccounted animals.

Time to Culturally Ostracize the owner Shannon Miranda, those associated with the facility and the family. If the law won’t prosecute, there are others ways to make life difficult letting them know they are no longer welcome or accepted by the community. Make life unpleasant and uncomfortable. Begin public shaming Humboldt CA.

And seek the full force of penalty including Fraud, Felony and of course any and all animal cruelty charges. Make this as painful and public as possible. Seize all assets if possible.

The remains of over 100 dogs were found at a Northern California animal sanctuary during an investigation into suspected animal cruelty, the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office said on Friday. Preliminary reports say 70 of the dogs examined had died of gunshot wounds.

The investigation into Miranda's Rescue in Fortuna began April 22 after the sheriff's office said they received credible information of allegations of felony animal abuse, animal cruelty, fraud and conspiracy.

The sheriff's office completed the search on Friday and announced they had unearthed the intact remains of 117 dogs from two separate dig sites.
