@shaTIRED Not to point out the obvious, but Black Jamaicans aren't indigenous, they were brought as slaves to the island just like Black Americans. She's making an interesting observation from one formally enslaved population to another.
After sitting on a NY grand jury for two months I can tell you my take. As a grand jury you sit and hear testimony from witnesses. We would listen to all they had to say. We were allowed to ask them questions. Once that was done an assistant district attorney would read us the law. Word for word. Yes, all of it. Then they left the room with the person who typed transcripts. Together with the members of the grand jury we would review the evidence presented to us. If there were photos or video we could review them again. If we had a question the witness could be brought back. The foreperson would ask if we wanted to vote. Then we went around the room and said our votes. Once finished the ADA returned to the room. The foreperson reported to them if the grand jury had voted to indict. All discussion and vote took place alone. No ADA was present. No pressure of any kind. It was just the grand jurors. The people I served with took their job seriously. They listened and took notes. ( all notes were collected each day by the foreperson. Nothing left the room) I personally enjoyed my time serving. I learned a great deal about our justice system from the inside. It is not an easy job to do and those decisions weigh on you. In NY a grand juror cannot speak about what happens in that room. Nothing. Not even to your spouse. They make it VERY clear they will prosecute if you are caught. I did not doubt that for a minute. DAs and ADAs can be very imposing. You take an oath at the start of service. That’s my two cents for what it is worth. The only difference is this grand jury only heard this case. The grand jury I sat on heard many cases. Sometimes a couple a day (drug cases). We understood we were the gate keepers. Was there enough evidence against the individual. That is the purpose of a grand jury. It is a check on the power of the district attorney’s office. The people are the ones who ultimately decide if an individual can be charged, after a thorough review of evidence. THE PEOPLE not the DA determine if a person is charged. It is not like that in every state. It is THE LAW in New York.
I had a guy friend with a Ph.D in engineering ask me last week how women pee with a tampon in and this is why men shouldn’t be passing laws about women’s bodies.
A recent study by Italian economists found that pro soccer players from Africa, who are most commonly targeted by racial abuse, played significantly better in the second half of last season, when supporters were no longer in the stadium https://t.co/u3B1Pw0Ql5
Ghana will end the selling of raw cocoa materials to trade partners like Switzerland and other European nations.
Ghana’s president said this is to break out of neo-colonial trading patterns, where others refine and get rich while they stay poor.
