Fifteen years ago, I sat in a doctor's office and heard words that would change the trajectory of my life: prostate cancer. It is a moment that strips you bare. It confronts you with your own fragility, with the terrifying silence of mortality.

In that darkness, however, something remarkable happened. Mama Kisumu, Dorothy Nyong'o, and I made a solemn vow not only to survive, but to ensure that no Kenyan, regardless of the weight of their purse or the emptiness of their pockets, would have to walk the cancer journey alone, abandoned and without hope.That vow became the Africa Cancer Foundation.

Today, under the weight of memory and the warmth of gratitude, we gathered to mark our 15th Anniversary under a theme that speaks to the very core of our humanity: "Own Your Cancer Story." We were honoured to be joined by Dr. Gladwell Kiarie as Chief Guest, alongside the dedicated Board and staff who have carried this torch through storm and sunshine, friends, relatives, survivors, donors, partners and supporters.

I was reminded with tears in my eyes, of why we began this journey. Our mission is not abstract. It is flesh and blood. It is the mother in Kilifi who cannot afford chemotherapy. It is the young man in Kibra who fears the diagnosis more than the disease itself. It is to restore hope, uphold dignity, and provide quality cancer care to every single one of them.

Over these fifteen years, standing shoulder to shoulder with our partners who believe in the impossible, we have done what many said could not be done. We have advanced policies that once seemed beyond reach. We have expanded screening and awareness to villages where cancer was once spoken about only in whispers. We have proven, with the stubborn persistence of those who have looked death in the eye, that advocacy transforms systems, while service changes lives.

Our commitment burns as fiercely today as it did in that doctor's office fifteen years ago. In Kisumu, we are strengthening the very foundation of cancer care through the soon to be realised Chun Jeong Un Nyong'o Cancer Centre. We fully support the establishment of Kenya's first public bone marrow transplant programme at JOOTRH, a beacon of hope for countless families who have long been told to look elsewhere, or to simply give up. And we are embracing innovations that will bring early detection within reach of every Kenyan, not just the privileged few.

Today, we also launched the Africa Cancer Foundation's Mobile Clinic, bringing life-saving cancer screening closer to communities through outreach in markets and other public spaces.

As we celebrate this milestone, I do so not with the triumph of conquest, but with the quiet resolve of one who knows the battle is far from over. We renew our solemn commitment to building a future where cancer is detected early, more lives are saved, and where every Kenyan can face this journey with the dignity, hope, and the support they deserve.

This is not just my story. It is our story, and I urge every one of you to own it. Own your story!

Ethiopia just earned $3 billion from coffee exports, though it is Africa's second-largest exporter behind Uganda, which reported $2.4 billion in April.
The reason for this earnings gap comes down to quality and bean type. Approximately 80% of Uganda's exports consist of lower-priced Robusta beans, which are easier to grow but fetch a lower price globally. Ethiopia, however, exports almost 100% premium Arabica coffee.
Because Ethiopia is the biological birthplace of Arabica, its beans are highly prized for their superior flavour, allowing them to command a massive price premium. Combined with recent quality reforms, Ethiopia makes far more money despite shipping a smaller physical volume of coffee. When will Uganda turn the tables?

🚨 BREAKING: The court just delivered a massive blow to thousands of Kenyan graduates.

The court has ruled that KeNHA can advertise Engineer jobs while excluding Engineering Technologists.

Background:

-Engineers study BSc Engineering and register with EBK.
-Engineering Technologists study BSc Engineering Technology and register with KETRB.

Their job roles overlap a lot in practice.

KeNHA advertised Engineer positions and required applicants to hold a BSc Engineering degree and be registered with EBK.

Engineering Technologists went to court, arguing they were qualified for many of the advertised roles and were being unfairly locked out.

The court disagreed and sided with KeNHA.

The result? Many Engineering Technologists cannot apply for "Engineer" jobs unless employers, in this case, KENHA, specifically create Technologist positions.

This is a bigger problem in Kenya's universities.

Many institutions offer courses that heavily overlap with established professional degrees.

Parents and students pay hundreds of thousands, believing the opportunities are similar.

Then graduation comes.

That's when many discover that professional recognition, licensing, and job opportunities are not the same.

Should universities be required to clearly disclose these limitations before admitting students? A sad situation for many.

Students must understand that there are consequences when they set other human beings on fire.

When I visited Naivasha maximum prison I met the only suspect sentenced to death for the May 24, 1999 arson attack in Nyeri High School that claimed the lives of four prefects.

The student was 33 years old or thereabout when I met him. He was convicted by a juvenile court and later committed to life imprisonment after he turned 18.

The 2001 Kyanguli fire tragedy claimed the lives of 67 students. Two 16-year-olds were arrested and charged with murder. The judge handling the matter resigned in 2006 amid corruption-related allegations. A new judge declared the court matter a mistrial.
I took my time with the file, and it was clear that someone had done everything to make sure the two boys escaped justice. I tracked one down to an office in the CBD. He is somewhere out here.

The July 13, 1991, St Kizito High School massacre remains the most disturbing and heart-wrenching story I have covered.

The boys stormed the girls' dormitory. Reason? They had refused to join them in a strike.

In the ensuing violence, 71 school girls were raped and 19 of them lost their lives, mostly due to suffocation after being tightly packed into a corner during the attack.

Some were arrested and as usual, parents worked the justice system and many escaped the hangman’s noose.

But in a dark twist of events, most of the accused “turned mad”, and others ended up as drunks.
I remember visiting a lady now in her fifties who was still overwhelmed by the events of that night- oh she cried.

I met most of the boys then now men. Drunkards. Wasted.

Let’s see how the tragic Utumishi Fire tragedy plays out but if the prosecution proves those arrested are involved, it will be the end of school and freedom.

I have been to Nyeri, St Kizito, Kyanguli, Endarasha, and Bombolulu Girls' High School.
It's a life-changing experience!

No amount of justice or compensation can bring back the lives lost.

Claims in the media that national leaders ignored the tragic fire at Utumishi Girls during the National Prayer Breakfast are misleading and do not reflect what transpired at the event. President William Ruto expressly acknowledged the tragedy during his remarks, conveyed condolences to the affected families, and invited First Lady Rachel Ruto to lead the congregation in prayers for the victims and all those impacted. It is therefore inaccurate to suggest that the incident was ignored, as the leadership publicly recognized the tragedy and joined the nation in mourning and prayer.

Panic is rising at Times Tower.

I am reliably informed that KRA is relaxing 2025 tax filing rules.

Right now, the rule is brutal.

If you paid for a purchase in 2025 and the seller did NOT give you an eTIMS invoice:

• You cannot automatically deduct that expense.

Instead:

• You must prepare an Excel list
• List all such purchases
• Attach whatever receipts you were given
• Submit the list to KRA

Only after KRA approves it,
That is when you can deduct the expense.

But here is where KRA cornered everyone.

- KRA inserted one dangerous column in that list.

It is called the 'Seller's PIN' for every single expense line.

Now, where will you get PINs for:
• Matatus
• Farmers
• Jua Kali merchants et al

Even formal sellers have refused. Completely.
They have sworn they would rather be hung than release their PINs.

They,
• Fear customers will expose them to KRA
• Fear customers will exaggerate purchases (100 becomes 2000)
• Fear KRA will accuse them of under declaring income

As a result,
• Taxpayers cannot complete their filings
• 2025 tax returns are stuck
• KRA is missing its tax collection targets

Panic has entered Times Tower.

Now, wind has it that by end of this month:

• KRA will remove that one dangerous column.

You will still:

• Prepare the list of purchases
• Submit it to KRA

But WITHOUT the seller’s PIN.

Is this a welcome move?
Can it be simplified further?
