I’m really pleased to have been invited by Nottingham City Libraries to speak as part of this year’s Nottingham Mental Health Awareness Weeks programme.
On Thursday 8 October, I’ll be at Nottingham Central Library delivering:
Tough Talk: Recognising Distress Earlier, Reaching In Sooner, Preventing Suicide
And it’s completely free to attend.
A lot of suicide prevention starts when somebody tells us they’re struggling.
But what about the person who doesn’t?
The man who keeps going to work.
Keeps functioning.
Keeps saying he’s fine.
But something about him has changed.
That is the space we’ll explore.
Why distress may appear through behaviour before words.
Why support existing doesn’t necessarily mean people can reach it.
Why “just reach out” cannot be the whole prevention strategy.
And what ordinary people can actually do when somebody they know doesn’t seem themselves.
You don’t need to be a therapist.
You don’t need to diagnose anyone.
Sometimes prevention starts with noticing something has changed and being willing to reach in.
