So twenty years ago on the 22nd of August I arrived in Tokyo Japan to work in a church school teaching English. This post is a collection of my blog from those days as it did not go as planned.
Anyway if it sparks your interest:

Cara was scraped a second time & posted to Hugging Face. Scrapers say it's legal, it shouldn't be.
The entire web can be scraped, we know, so Cara educates its users on the issues.
But what's happening now are sheer acts of violating consent, to target, to inflict pain. 1/
What the hell must I do?
Artists just want a place online where platforms don't feed their work to AI. So I built Cara. But people just won't leave us alone.
The laws don't help us, the governments don't help us. What are artists supposed to do exactly? 1/
So AI labs are buying old books by the pallet, slicing them apart, scanning the pages, and pulping what's left. The orders are keyed to ISBNs and blind to scarcity. Nobody in the pipeline checks whether the book being shredded is one of the last copies on earth. Some of them probably are. 1/6
Instagram decided to roll out a new “Muse AI” feature, that lets users create AI images based on people’s Instagram photos.
Then they opted in EVERYONE with a public account

"Consent is not a nuisance, and it is worth protecting."
SAG-AFTRA President @SeanAstin testified before a House Judiciary Subcommittee today in support of the NO FAKES Act, continuing the fight to protect every person's right to control their own voice and likeness.
If technology becomes the ultimate criterion, the human person risks being reduced to data, a cog in a machine or a commodity. If, however, technology is integrated with a wise perspective, it can become an instrument of growth, justice and fraternity. #MagnificaHumanitas
We cannot consider #AI to be morally neutral. In reality, every technical tool embodies choices and priorities through what it measures, ignores, and optimizes, and how it classifies people and situations. Ethical discernment cannot be limited to asking whether we are using a system for good or bad purposes. It must also examine how that system is designed and what vision of the human person and society is embedded in the data and models that guide it. #MagnificaHumanitas
One of my favourite hand-to-hand movie scenes because even though it looks slower and more methodical and less exciting, it's probably the most realistic portrayal of BJJ defense tactics I've ever seen. The scene is accurate at portraying someone who has done martial arts for years
“Every single company doing this has the same assumption baked in:
1-The AI will do what it says it did.
2-The AI will follow instructions from the right people.
3-The AI will not do things it was not asked to do.
The paper says all three assumptions are wrong.”
