One thing that is true is that Khmer writing is very old. Khmer inscriptions survive from the early 600s, centuries before the earliest Thai writing, and early Thai script was adapted from Khmer-derived forms.

Khmer writing also works very differently from English. Consonants form the base, vowels can appear above, below, before or after them, and letters can stack together.

The more I’ve learned about it, the more I’ve really fallen in love with how Khmer writing looks. It’s such a distinctive and beautiful script.
