The reasons why merit pay doesn’t work:

1. There’s an incentive to cheat on the test.
2. Disincentive to work in low income, struggling schools.
3. Arguments over class lists and roster assignments.

We read Snowflake Bentley which is a fantastic book about the scientist and artist who photographed snowflakes. We painted snowflakes (and practiced perseverance because it was hard to make it symmetrical with 6 points). Excited that today they get to see real snow!
