We can reveal: Kenya is lining up to import maize from Zambia in the coming weeks, not export it.

A Kenyan company, BAITA Trading, has asked Lusaka to reserve grain after a meeting with Siazongo Siakalenge according to Zambia Broadcasting media posts.

The firm says it can pay for and collect 10.8 million 90kg bags immediately, about 972,000 tonnes, followed by another 3 million bags.

That is against a Kenyan requirement of 25 million bags, or roughly 2.2 million tonnes.

Zambia says it can supply from a 5.1 million-tonne harvest, plus more than 1.6 million tonnes carried over.

Ruto said Kenya would become a maize exporter.

These numbers say the opposite.

If the surplus was real, why is Nairobi shopping in Lusaka?

What happened to that promise?
